Interchanging Assertive and Interrogative sentences

An interrogative sentence is sometimes interrogative only in form :, in substance it is an emphatic statement. For example , both the following sentences:
      – Who can bear such an insult?
      – Can any one bear  such an insult?

Are interrogative only in form . They have not been framed to elicit any information.
They want to make an emphatic statement:
      – Nobody can bear such an insult.

It is possible to change the form of such a sentence from interrogative to assertive and vice versa.

We should remember that an affirmative question implies a negative statement while a negative question implies an affirmative statement:

Am I wrong ? = I am not wrong .
Aren’t you crossing all the limits?= You are crossing all the limits.

Now study the following examples carefully:-

1. Interrogative:- Isn’t she exceptionally tall for her age ?
Assertive:- She is exceptionally tall for her age .

2. Interrogative :- Can amassing wealth be the sole aim of life ?
Assertive:- Amassing wealth cannot be the sole aim of life .

Interchanging Exclamatory and Assertive Sentences

Exclamatory Sentences are spoken or written to express strong emotions. Their word order is slightly different from that of an assertive sentence. While changing an Exclamatory Sentence to an assertive one , the normal word order is restored . But some study the following examples carefully:-

1. Exclamatory:- How witty and meaningful his comments were!
Assertive:-  His comments were very witty and meaningful.

2. Exclamatory:- O that spring were eternal !
Assertive:- I wish that spring were eternal.
